I'm BACK! Took a bit of time off to re-energise and reflect, but I think it's time to put the foot on the pedal now 😁 After you've watched the video, I've got a question - which would you now be more likely to buy - newer midrange or older flagship? To find out if TikTok Life Hacks are a scam or not: irglo.info/from/mqeVhWiVgquoYpc/fy-lm-h-y.html

Cause flagships last longer now. Itt uses to be you had to upgrade every 2 years or your phone is useless. Now you can get up to 4-5 years with a Samsung, 6+ with apple. 4ish with a pixel. I'm not sure other brands

On your train but cant actually buy phones yet lol, so just use mid rangers. It is a good investment and you more than make up for it in the long time you use your phone. Not to mention the lower frequency of changing phones is a lot more stable, financially and also just for your setup.

Great video as always, however I have my own thoughts about it. I have a POCO X3 Pro and it is a great phone for my needs and what I was looking in a phone; flagship phones have lost appeal to me, my phone has: headphone Jack, IR blaster, micro SD slot, a Snapdragon 860, 8GB of RAM, a 120Hz refresh rate and an average camera of 48Mpx. Flagships don't have half of the features that I mentioned anymore and I do use them and the camera is not an important feature for me. Flagships cost way more and even that they look and feel awesome, it might have some slight changes but that is all.

NFC, can't forget about this little but useful feature, and, just like you, my X3 PRO is perhaps the best one I've had, considering my "best phones" before where an Alcatel P1 and a Zenfone 4 Max

I'd much rather have a one year old flagship, especially Samsung. You're getting a lot for about at least 50% to 70% less of the starting price. That's what happens to the S series. And I couldn't care less about the warranty, the only way that warranty is going to help you is if the hardware somehow has some faults (just like in your example). And it's nice to have 4 years of major updates, even on the mid range phones, but for what? After the third major update your phone is most likely to move much slower, given that it is Android and a mid-range, in the end.

  • Darren Scarlet

Just wanted to say that if you pick mid rangers from certain other brands from similar price ranges as the ones shown in this video, there are multiple that have the 12 GB ram 256GB memory with simply superior benchmarks. Just don't get midrange phones from companies that try to sell you their flagship phones instead.

Just to add flagships tend to have greater software to hardware performance compatibility. you will notice this in games a mid range phone with an updated processor will perform better compared to an two year old flagship phone but that performance will degrade the longer you use your device while playing you will start to see fps go down at 60% battery where as flagships tend to be consistent until it reaches 15% battery life

The display and the camera are the only reasons I go after the flagships. I prefer buying a 2 year old flagship. The only thing you miss out on is 1-2 years of support compared to if you had bought it new. Not a big deal if you don't game on your phone. I'm still using a Samsung flagship from four years ago that I purchased two years ago.

Good one, expectedly flagship won! I would rather argue on the old battery - as it is quite possible that 2020 flagships are still being manufactured, so the battery is still a fresh one!

  • ASdragon0
    ASdragon0

One thing more older flagships have already several custom roms which can speed up a phone or make it run on todays android. If you buy a 2020 flagship used you must change battery now or after year losing ip68 and paying for new battery and the service. It's complicated but if phone is new just shelfed in the store for 2 years it can take i think 10-15% battery when used 30-45% that's another level ... If you buy mid range with good battery/performance it will be better or you can go for iphone xs xr (new refurbished they will have 10-15% less battery but iphone hold the screen on time best results) Results: Newer has better battery overall but without compare to iphone, iphone can and with 95% situations will have better SoT and will be more respondles in compare to mid range Have a longer service support up to 2 years more then previous one Cheaper prices of service parts after warranty Older: Better charging/wireless charging/ip 68/better screen/slightly worse SoT(only Iphone has better)more features, better materials, more custom roms, better camera, bigger screens and many more

I also experienced this when I bought my Redmi K40 Gaming phone (Global Rom) 8gb 256gb. I was deciding whether to buy the redmi or a used flagship in this case the Samsung note 10 (Due to pricing in my country both of these phones cost around 350$). I opted to go with the redmi because of the following reasons. First, The redmi has a way more capable chip (Dimensity 1200) than exynos of note 10 and can go toe to toe with sd 855. Second, I do not prioritize camera quality albeit the redmi has a 64mp shooter which is fairly decent. Third, The redmi has 67w fast charging. Lastly, The redmi has pop up triggers, feels great for playing PSP emulator and other games like Standoff 2. I do admit the redmi does not support Widevine L1 but it makes up for it with a 120hz refresh rate 480hz sampling rate HDR10 Samsung Amoled. It also has a Gorilla Glass 5 back and screen with aluminum frame. I also expect the redmi will have more official updates but the custom roms for flagships is a valid argument too. I would have want the curved screen but overall from the build quality to the performance the redmi is no slouch and for the price it's money well-spent.

The battery isn't necessarily a deal breaker. These days you can't just swap it, but they can replace it at a repair shop for a fair price within the day. That's how I got my old Samsung A5 to serve me for almost 5 years now. The poor thing is about to physically disintegrate at this point from wear but the internals are fine. I plan to replace it soon with a phone you can flash with LineageOS, so no warranty either way and the community gives faster and more system updates than the vendor would. It all points to an old flagship for me. Thanks Arun, I didn't even consider that option!

@Generous I got Huawei P30 (used, 2019 release), and just a few month after got Samsung Note 20 ultra (new, 2020 release). First thing measured battery capacity, and somehow used P30 got a bit more juice in the battery than it is supposed to have, meanwhile new note 20 battery holds only ~4.250 mAh (should be 4.500). It's not a big deal for me because i use P30 as daily driver(would be a big disappointment the other way around tho) and from personal experience P30 holds charge better compare to note 20. Efficiency matters, and battery is a bit of a lottery.

i was with one a5 2016 since 2017, very good phone for me, a brave piece of tecnology that died because to fix the screen was more expensive than buying a new one (and he was a little old for the task, from 16Gb for 128 is a good upgrade that i really needed)

Talk about timing, I was planning on getting my folks a new pair of phones and the contradiction of whether to go for new mid rangers and old flagships came up. It helps even further at the fact that I had my heart set on getting them old flagships from the get go and this just helped like a major boost. Camera is pretty tricky to compare though, especially in Xiaomi's case. The Mi 10 Pro can probably even outdo Xiaomi 12 Pro in many scenarios, and its camera setup is essentially the same as Mi Note 10 which was a mid-range phone from late 2019 (Mi Note 10's camera was a huge outlier considering its price. Even today, it's hard to find a new phone that rivals it at its launch price, let alone its current price).

@Gold Dogger It's a pretty great phone if long-term software support isn't a priority (it is after all a 2 year old phone at this point). As great as the aforementioned Mi Note 10 was in terms of camera, it was pretty average in other regards. Mi 10 Pro coupled that great camera setup with flagship SoC, display, etc.

I have to say I didn't expect this result. Unfortunately though you can only get an old flagship at a decent price if you buy it on eBay, they still cost too much new at least where I live. And considering all the ways a phone can degrade over time, I don't know if I want to take the risk.

@Interstellar Lunar those are the most popular midrange phones... only tech geeks would choose a random chinese midrange phone the general consumer would just go for a Samsung Galaxt A53... and either way flagships stay flagships, midrangers will always have that midrange mindset, being more mass produced and cheaper quality

    • Octavius the Honorable
      Octavius the Honorable

For me, I barely take photos and I barely game on my phone. So the photo and performance points don't really concern me. No the 6 points ties with 4. The mid-tiers typically have plastic covers... And yeah they feel cheap and they probably don't protect against drops on the ground or in water. But even with people with flagships get cases... Just get a case and screen protector for your mid ranger and you are good. That takes another point off for flag ship in my book. And regarding the unboxing -- it lasts for 30 minutes. And the charger you had with your old phone probably can work on your new phone. Charge it overnight everyday, have a car charger, and your battery should be fine. Also, flagships tend to be way more annoying for repair -- taking off a plastic cover vs a glass, veramic, or metal cover.

I would likely go with the midrange phone. Wireless charging and other features are cool but I have never used them in the past with flagships. And I don't do intense stuff like gaming on my phone so it would be better for me. Currently have the S21 but will go with a midrange phone in ~2 years when I want to switch phones.

@Android One IU 4.1 Dude you are delusional and are liking your own comments... Look at the comparison made by "The Tech Chap" or "Mrwhosetheboss" or any other channel really. All come to the same conclusion. And because of that my next phone is going to have a snapdragon rather than the exynos. Unless in the next few years the Exynos finally catches up but if history is anything to go by I think we are just going to get promises by samsung and no delivery. If you have an Exynos phone and like it that is fine but look at the facts. Snapdragon version of the same phone outperforms the Exynos.

I think you should've mentioned this as well, the cheaper phones despite having better software support, also dont exactly have the hardware to sustain it always. For example the budget samsungs are *notorious* for having horrible performance sustainability even after the updates. My father has an A51 and it runs so badly anyone could think it is 5-6 years old even though it just became 2 years old.

Plastic was the reason I chose Galaxy s2 over iPhone 4 back in 2011. Plus, the fact that something is made of plastic doesn’t automatically mean “it feels cheap”. The plastic phones you have there are of a great build quality.

@Someone You Never Know Not really, you could say they're more futuristic considering the rise of wireless earbuds. It's at a point now where mid rangers have started to lack jack. Lack of SD card will be an issue for anything under 256gb to be considered future proof tho that I agree.

    • Someone You Never Know
      Someone You Never Know

@77W tbf, majority of flagships are trash nowadays with missing headphone jack, MicroSD card and other features to make it future proof

    • 77W
      77W

@maxroman2010 what's wrong with the internals of s22? The only thing it falls short of is battery life. Also I find it funny how your trashing s22 for internals but praising the pixel which uses an exynos chipset that's inferior than the one on S21. It's not even close to the same league as the Snapdragon s22. The only true rival of s22 series is I'd say iPhone 13, pixel 6 pro is comparable to s21Fe price and hardware wise and Xiaomi and others have terrible software support for them to be considered flagship.
